Johnny Bench hits his 300th home run
Mets 12, Reds 3 in New York
July 26, 1978: Johnny Bench hit a 2-run home run off Nino Espinosa in T4 for his 300th career home run. He ended his career with 389 home runs. I unfortunately cut this scoresheet up not realizing it was his 300th home run. I was trying to capture Grandma’s sincere and genuine excitement as Pete Rose was in pursuit of Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hit streak. You can see the next game on 7/28/78 in Philadelphia Pete Rose hits in his 40th consecutive game tying Ty Cobb.
